Massey Ferguson traces its origins back to the mid-19th century. The company was formed by the merger of two companies: Massey-Harris and Ferguson. Founded in 1847 in Newcastle, Ontario, Canada by Daniel Massey.

The company initially manufactured simple agricultural implements. Founded by Harry Ferguson in the early 20th century in Northern Ireland. Harry Ferguson was an inventor and engineer, most famous for developing the Ferguson System, a three-point linkage for tractors. The two companies merged in 1953 to form Massey-Harris-Ferguson. The name was later shortened to Massey Ferguson in 1958.
